Located among the southern suburbs just south of Wynberg and east of some Constantia suburbs, Plumstead has become a sought-after area for property investors, as it offers affordable homes. In fact, demand is currently so great that stock in the area is in short supply and homes coming onto the market tend to be snapped up rather quickly. Most of the existing homes in Plumstead were built in the 1940s and 50s and many still retain their original low walls and fences. Here neighbours stop to chat while they walk their dogs or take children to a park.
The suburb is home to many older residents who have lived there for decades, but an increasing amount of younger buyers have bought into the area and renovations of older homes is on the increase.
A number of newer apartment blocks and security cluster developments have sprung up in Plumstead and it is also home to a few retirement complexes – both municipal and private.
Plumstead is well placed for commuters offering quick and easy access to the M5 motorway offering routes to the city, the northern suburbs, Cape Town International Airport and down south to Muizenberg on the False Bay coast line.
Plumstead train Station lies in the heart of the Plumstead Village and is a very well used stop for commuters travelling in and out of the City or towards False Bay.
The suburb is home to a number of schools and churches and Main Road Plumstead buzzes with antique shops, second hand furniture outlets, popular takeaway franchises, supermarkets, petrol stations, banks and butchers and bakeries among other merchandisers, including the popular Paul Bothner’s music store.
The Constantiaberg Clinic borders the suburb and apart from offering a first class emergency and trauma unit as well as a fully operational hospital is home to a number of top-class medical practitioners and specialists.
