What's happening to the restaurants in Vredehoek and Oranjezicht?

Category Property news

Thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic, many businesses and their employees have taken to a more permanent "work-from-home" model, which has many benefits for both employers and employees alike.

This phenomenon has led to an increase in the number of people selling to upsize, due to the need for home office space, while we've also observed others doing quite the opposite and a continuation of the trend of purchasers opting for smaller homes. A significant portion of the market seems to feel that all the extra space isn't required, given that they would prefer to work from coffee shops fit for the purpose, such as the popular Bootleggers for example which offers high-speed WiFi, power points and comfortable seating.

As most of the neighborhood may know, Oranjezicht has now become the home to an Ou Meul bakery which has big shoes to fill after taking over the iconic Wills Cafe location. It's a similar story for its sister brand and Cape Town's favorite new coffee shop franchise, Bootleggers, which takes the place of old favorite, Sidewalk Cafe on Derry street in Vredehoek.

The new brands bring exciting new energy to the area, as it creates a dynamic space to get out of the house and enjoy a top draw barista coffee at your mobile working space. We are finding that purchasers who are looking at properties in the hood are excited about these new changes and that it has had a positive effect on buying activity as the additions are seen as contributions towards the "complete package" Vredehoek / Oranjezicht offers.

Has Vredehoek become a 'luxury property' destination?

Vredehoek has experienced a wave of new developments over the last few years offering some very luxurious apartments with all the bells and whistles, which appeals to the younger generations who are making their move from the suburbs, closer to the city.

This has been a boon for owners in the neighborhood as it has driven up the value of properties in the area and prompted other apartment blocks to keep up with their maintenance.
